Time Atlas Was "wrong" on The Ice of Greenland

British scientists say polar Times Atlas of the World is wrong to say that I had to redraw the map of Greenland due to climate change.

Advertisement for the latest edition of the Atlas, which was launched last week, said the warming was 15% above the Greenland ice-covered earth "green and free of ice."

But scientists at the Scott Polar Research Institute say the figures are false, so the ice has not diminished.

Atlas costs £ 150 ($ 237) and claims to be the world "authoritative."

13. edition version of "complete" the Atlas with a number of revisions due to changes in the environment as the previous one, published in 2007.

Break-up of some Antarctic ice shelves due to climate change, reducing the inland waters, such as the Aral Sea and the Dead, and the rivers dry as the Colorado River are all documented.

But the glossy billboards begin to argue that "the first time, a new edition (Atlas), has had to remove 15% of the time a permanent ice cap of Greenland - turning an area the size of the United Kingdom and Ireland , "green" and free of ice.

"This is concrete evidence of how climate change is altering the face of the earth forever -. And in doing so at an alarming rate and acceleration"

Scott Polar group, which includes director Julian Dowdeswell said the claim of a loss of 15% in just 12 years is wrong.

Map and satellite photos of the Scott Polar team says the treatment of East Greenland is especially worrisome

"The recent satellite images of Greenland is clear that there are still many glaciers and permafrost, where the new Times Atlas shows the ice conditions and the emergence of new land," he says in a letter that was sent to Times.

"I do not know why the error occurred, but it is regrettable that the drastic reduction of the measure complained of ice in Greenland has created news headlines from around the world.

"It's not what we know, no support for this claim in the published scientific literature."

Many employees are closely involved in research, document and analyze the effects of climate change in the Arctic.

As such, they argue that behind rising temperatures crossed the ice cover throughout the region, including along the edge of Greenland; claimed but not anything like as fast as the Times Atlas.

"It is crucial ... statement on climate change and its impact accurately and save the state gras with concrete evidence and correct", they say.

The Times Atlas is owned by The Times newspaper. It is published by Times Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, which in turn owned by News Corporation Rupert Murdoch.

A spokeswoman for HarperCollins said the new map is based on information provided by the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

"While global warming has played a role in this reduction, it is also due to far more accurate and thorough research is now available. Read as a whole, as the press release and the 13th edition of the Atlas clarify this point. "
