Using satellite data, scientists found that, globally, agricultural land in urban areas reached an equivalent wide area of 28 EU countries.

"This is the first study documenting the global food production in and around urban areas," said Pay Drechsel, researchers from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

"There are people who talk about urban agriculture, but we do not know what the details."

"How is it compared to other farming systems? This study shows that urban agriculture is much broader than what we expected."

Drechsel pointed paddy land area in the countryside in South Asia is smaller than in the surrounding urban area.

Likewise, corn land in sub-Saharan Africa is not an area of land in the urban area.

International team of scientists says new research could be a question for the focus of agricultural research and development has been concentrated in the countryside.
