The Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec) announced that it will be to build a polysilicon production value of about U.S. $ 1 billion in Qatar.

The plant will produce 8000 QSTec mtpa (tpa) of pure polycrystalline silicon solar high quality and is expected to begin its work in the second half of 2013. Which is chosen with future expansion in mind, lies at 1,200 square meters of land in Ras Laffan Industrial City in the northeast of Qatar, in the heart of Qatar's LNG (liquefied natural gas), refineries and for export.

Driven by Qatar long-term vision for sustainability, QSTec aims to exploit its natural resources and research facilities for advanced manufacturing and development of solar technologies locally, which will benefit not only in Qatar but have a positive impact in the protecting the global environment.

Dr. Khalid K. Al Hajri, Director and CEO of QSTec said, "By leveraging resources in Qatar today to make polysilicon, which in turn creates a wide range of solar technologies and products, we help the global transition to a more diversified mix of clean energy solutions. "

"In Qatar we have been blessed with energy above and below the surface. We exploited the energy below the earth through our LNG exports, and now we are looking for the sun with a view to harness their unlimited potential" he said.

QSTec Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract was awarded to Punj Lloyd Group, a conglomerate with major EPC based in Gurgaon, India. Punj Lloyd has won the contract on the basis of a competitive process, and has a significant presence in the State of Qatar implementation of major EPC projects in oil and gas.

Launched in 2010, is a joint venture formed QSTec between Qatar Solar (a wholly owned subsidiary of the Qatar Foundation for the Development of Education, Science and the Community), Solar World AG and Qatar Development Bank. This is the first major investment in renewable energy to the Qatar Foundation, which emphasizes its commitment to support the transformation of Qatar to a hydrocarbon-based economy to a knowledge and innovation-based economy.

The contract to supply technology and equipment was awarded to the leading German solar photovoltaic CENTROTHERM AG in March 2010.
